Request an Account or a Project Allocation
Before you begin using Minerva, it is helpful to understand three basic concepts: your Minerva account, your project, and your resource allocation. Your account identifies who you are, your project identifies the research work you are doing, and an allocation determines which Minerva resources your project can use.
A Minerva account gives you the ability to log in to the Minerva HPC environment and run computational jobs. For most Mount Sinai researchers, access is requested through the Mount Sinai User account process. You will need your Mount Sinai username, your Principal Investigator (PI), and your department. Once your request is submitted, your PI is contacted for approval.
Your Minerva account is separate from your individual computer or workstation. Once you log in to Minerva, you are working on a shared computing system and can access the resources and software for which you and your research project are authorized.

The Minerva-Res User account has been created as some research projects require additional security controls because they involve restricted or controlled-access data.
- The Minerva-Res User account is granted strictly per-project, not by default
- Minerva-Res access is intended for
- NIH Controlled-Access Data Repositories
- CMS Research Identifiable Files (RIF)/Limited Data Sets (LDS) paired with a Minerva HPC Data Management Plan (DMP) Security Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ)
- External collaborator accounts are not supported
- For non-Mount Sinai users
- Request must be initiated by the PI
A resource allocation is the amount of Minerva computing capacity assigned to a research project. An allocation can determine the resources available to your project, such as:
- CPU computing time
- GPU computing resources
- Memory
- Storage
- Specialized computing resources
For example, a project performing large-scale statistical analyses may primarily need CPU resources, while a machine-learning project may require access to GPUs.
When you submit a job to Minerva, the job runs using resources associated with your project and allocation. A project allocation can be requested for either a new or existing project.
