Getting Started

Step 1: Request a School Account

Note: AIR·MS requires a school account (mssm.edu domain) to gain access. Hospital users (mountsinai.org) will need to request a “School Network Account” via SailPoint.

Step 2: Obtain Mount Sinai IRB approval for your Research

You will need to draft an individual IRB protocol for your project. You can find out more about the compliance requirements by visiting this page: Compliance Overview: HIPAA and Institutional Review Board Requirements | Scientific Computing and Data.

Access to PHI via AIR·MS requires an IRB-approved protocol detailing the scope of AIR·MS utilization. You can reference AIR·MS in your protocol as follows- for instance, “we will use the AIR·MS platform (IRB # 20-01288) to access and store our data.”
Remember to attach a copy of your approved protocol with your access request. Failure to do so may result in your submission being denied.
For inquiries, please submit a ticket (internal users only): AIR·MS Ticket Portal – Jira Service Management.

Note: Access to de-identified or synthetic data does not require an IRB.

Step 3: Make sure to complete the AIR·MS data use agreement (DUA) and upload your IRB protocol

Step 4: Request a Minerva / HPC account

If you intend to use AIR·MS from Minerva and do not already have a Minerva account, use the link above to submit a request.
Accessing AIR·MS from Minerva allows you to take full advantage of the powerful high-performance compute clusters, the SAP HANA in-memory database, and pre-configured tools such as python, Jupyter Notebooks and R Studio.

Please note that Minerva also requires a School Network Account.

Step 5: Request access to AIR·MS using Mount Sinai SailPoint and the associated How-To guide

To request initial access to AIR·MS or to request an additional data modality, follow the steps outlined in the How-To guide linked above. This guide will take you through using SailPoint to request access. In addition, it lists the currently available datasets making them easy to locate.

Step 6: Connect to AIR·MS over Minerva using the provided How-To guide and AIR·MS Getting Started Notebooks

Step 7: Start using AIR·MS!
