Rose Long defends her dissertation!

Congratulations to Rose Long for successfully defending her dissertation! Rose was very productive during her PhD studies and developed many elegant methods for evaluating tissue engineering repair materials for injured intervertebral discs. Her dissertation was entitled “Repair of Herniated Intervertebral Discs: Designing and Translating Annulus Fibrosus Sealants”.

ISSLS Annual Meeting – May 29-June 2

The 44th Annual Meeting of ISSLS took place in Athens, Greece from May 29th to June 2nd, 2017. Dr. Iatridis moderated 1 session (Disc Regeneration) and provided 2 podium presentations:Hyperosmolar overloading induces notochordal cell differentiation with osmosensitive aquaporin3 upregulation and altered N-cadherin and connexin-43 expression” and “Bioactive dietary polyphenol preparation for preventing painful behavior associated with lumbar disc degeneration: an in-vivo rat model”.

Mount Sinai Spine Research Day – May 18

The Sinai Spine Research Day on May 18th highlights the latest clinical and basic science spine research and demonstrates the strong commitment to promote research that answers critical scientific questions while also improving clinical care. This year, four members of the spine lab will be giving presentations:

Alon Lai: “Bioactive dietary polyphenol preparation for preventing painful behavior associated with lumbar disc degeneration”

Thomas Evashwick-Rogler: “Hyperosmolar overloading induces notochordal cell differentiation with osmosensitive Aquaporin3 upregulation and altered Ncadherin and Connexin43 expression”

Rose Long: “Repair of annular injury using a fibrin based sealant in ovine after one year”

Olivia Torre: “Development of an in vivo model of neonatal intervertebral disc injury and regeneration”

Welcome to Nimrod Korda!

Welcome to Nimrod Korda who joins the lab as our student intern.  Nimrod will receive his BS from the ORT Braude College of Engineering in Israel where he was a part of Dr. Sarit Sivan’s lab.  For his research, Nimrod will be working on characterizing a GAG-mimetic hydrogel for nucleus pulposus replacement.

Welcome to Kengo Fujii!

Welcome to Dr. Kengo Fujii who joins the lab for a research year as a postdoctoral fellow.  Dr. Fujii is a visiting orthopaedic surgeon from the University of Tsukuba in Japan. For his postdoctoral research, Dr. Fujii will apply his expertise to intervertebral disc biomechanics and mechanisms of discogenic pain.
