The Mount Sinai Adaptive Sports Program is designed to provide individuals with disabilities, including those with spinal cord injuries (SCI), opportunities to engage in physical activity, sports, and recreation. These programs focus on inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment, allowing participants to develop strength, confidence, and social connections through a variety of adaptive sports.
The program typically includes a range of activities such as wheelchair tennis, adaptive cycling, swimming, handcycling, adaptive skiing, and more. These sports are modified using specialized equipment and coaching techniques to accommodate different mobility levels and abilities.
Beyond physical benefits, adaptive sports foster a sense of independence, improve mental well-being, and create a supportive community. Many programs also offer competitive opportunities, allowing athletes to participate in local, national, and even international competitions, including the Paralympic Games.
