Study of Bone Marrow Transplantation-Related Epigenetic Factors in Alzheimer’s Disease

Dr. Ruth Iban-Arias’ main project is based on the creation of sex-mismatched chimeric mice involving 5xFAD mutants. The hypothesis is that the recipient recapitulates the donor hematopoiesis upon engraftment after bone marrow transplantation, playing an important role in the phenotypic outcome. We expect to observe immune cell-type specific epigenetic modifications, leading to exacerbated or delayed cognitive decline progression, a primary symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. The identification of the immune-related epigenetic modifiers could provide a potential intervention target in treating AD given the reversible nature of epigenetic changes.
