Matrix Mentor Model
SELF
Investigators are taught to be their own best mentors and to engage in periods of self-reflection, to determine priorities and professional goals utilizing an Individual career Development Plan (IDP), as a strategic planning tool to facilitate this process in conjunction with the scientific/research mentor.
SENIOR
The second level of mentorship is a senior investigator in the broader academic community with grant funding academic credentials. This Senior Mentor serves an advocacy role to further advance and retain early stage cancer researchers.
PEER
Peer mentors derived from other comparable early-stage investigators working in related fields of inquiry serve to integrate the early researcher into the fabric of the specific research environment and landscape.
STAFF
Staff, who are members of the grants and research infrastructure, who are individually paired with a given early stage investigator, so as to facilitate the process of grant and protocol submissions, to facilitate best practices and minimize the challenges and potential roadblocks that can be experienced in this process.
SCIENTIFIC
Scientific Mentor(s) is (are) the research mentor(s) who oversee the research career development and facilitates the process of transitioning from Mentored to Independent Investigators. This mentor usually meets with the mentee on a regular (weekly/bi-weekly) basis to review milestones and progress, along the mentored to independent investigator continuum.
