4D Technology Development Program Award 2016 — NIH and National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)

“The 4D Technology Development Program is focused on supporting faculty and post-doc technology development at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to effectively and efficiently move new technologies through a process of discovery, design, development, and delivery.”

Winners: Christopher Strother, MD, PI; Richard Vincent, Co-I; Hal Kaplan, MD, Co-I; and Octavio Perez, PhD, lighting designer.

Description: The aim of this project is to study the effects of various lighting spectra, using a novel lighting system, on the performance of emergency physicians doing simulated clinical procedures. Clinical performance, such as the number and severity of errors and the time it takes to complete the procedure, will be assessed in a simulated clinical environment at the Mount Sinai Hospital Emergency Department Simulation, Teaching, and Research Center (ED-STAR Center) in New York City. This will provide a framework and baseline data to test other lighting conditions to improve patient safety and health care quality.
