Interviewing 101: Developing your topic guide and practicing interviewing techniques

What to expect: This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the theoretical foundation and practical skills necessary to apply qualitative methods for population health research. Students will have the opportunity to consult with the workshop directors about their specific projects throughout the year! No prior experience working with qualitative methods necessary.  

Participants in this workshop can expect to: 

  1. Consider a research question for a qualitative project and identify which qualitative methods are appropriate for answering it.
  2. Learn about the structure of an interview guide and practice developing open-ended interview questions.
  3. Critique an existing interview and identify ways to improve it.
  4. Practice conducting a semi-structured interview.
  5. Reflect on a completed interview.

The faculty: 

  • Nihal E. Mohamed, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology and Oncological Science at Mount Sinai. Her research uses qualitative methods to evaluate patient unmet needs, experience, and patient-centered reported outcomes following cancer diagnosis.
  • Melanie Besculides, DrPH is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health Science and Policy at Mount Sinai. She is trained as an epidemiologist and mixed methods researcher. Her work focuses on program evaluation and implementation science.
  • Ksenia Gorbenko, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health Science & Policy who leads the Qualitative Hub in the Institute for Health Care Delivery Science. Dr. Gorbenko is a medical sociologist whose research spans health services, implementation science, and health policy research.
