Ashkenazi Jewish Studies

There have been a number of epidemiologic studies done in different populations over the years, and in each case, the prevalence of IBD is highest in the Ashkenazim – about six times more common than the next most-affected population, Europeans, which is evidence of a genetic component driving IBD in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

The Cho Lab is currently investigating the relationship between the genetic and environmental factors in the causation of IBD in Ashkenazi Jewish families. The study, titled “Defining the Genetic Architecture of IBD in Ashkenazi Jewish Populations,” is of great significance to members of the Ashkenazi Jewish community as it has strong future potential for both prevention and treatment of IBD.
