Sweis Lab Mission<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sweis Lab for Translational Neuroeconomics is driven by a core question: how does the brain make decisions? We believe that understanding the neural architecture of decision-making is one of the most important frontiers in science in order to better understand and treat most debilitating neuropsychiatric conditions we face as a society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our mission is to close the gap between mechanistic neuroscience and the lived experience of human behavior. We draw on principles from economics, evolutionary biology, and psychology to design behavioral experiments that capture complex cognitive and affective processes driving decisions and to study them rigorously across species. By pairing these translational behavioral paradigms with state-of-the-art circuit dissection tools, we aim to uncover the organizing principles by which the brain represents, weighs, and acts on information during choice.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are committed to doing science that matters. Our research is anchored by the goal of developing new therapeutic targets and strategies for neuropsychiatric disorders, including addiction and depression.<\/span><\/p>\n

In our lab, we believe in not only working harder but also smarter. We often run longitudinal tests of behavior that are complex and sometimes span the entire day across weeks to months for a single project. We intentionally designed an automated, high-throughput behavioral testing system. We believe in lowering the barrier to entry for experimenters to capture complex decision-making phenotypes while also acquiring big datasets at scale. Conducting complex behavioral testing is a unique attribute and core strength of our lab and is something we take pride in. This includes a lot of DIY projects that involve designing, developing, and constructing experimental tools from scratch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The research we conduct in the Sweis Lab would not be possible without the use of animal models, primarily rodents. We do not take this lightly. Our work with animals is governed at every level, by federal regulations, institutional oversight though protocols approved by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) the Office of Animal Care, Use, and Welfare at Mount Sinai, and most importantly, by our own deeply held commitment to the ethical treatment of the animals in our care.<\/p>\n

We adhere strictly to the principles of replacement, reduction, and refinement. We continuously evaluate whether animal use is necessary, work to minimize the number of animals used in each experiment, and refine our protocols to reduce any potential suffering. Every member of the lab who works with animals receives thorough training and understands both the scientific and moral dimensions of this responsibility.<\/p>\n

We believe it is important to be transparent about the fact that animals are integral to our work, and to approach that fact with the seriousness and gratitude it deserves. Our goal is always to conduct experiments that are both scientifically rigorous and ethically sound.<\/p>\n

Postdocs are the senior engines of the lab. We expect you to bring expertise and to use your time here to forge your own scientific identity. You will learn to independently lead projects from conception through publication, develop mentorship skills, and position yourself \u2014 with our active support \u2014 for the next stage of your career, in academia or beyond. This includes putting yourself on the map to the broader scientific community, building a national and international reputation, and securing independent funding. We expect you to be generative: to ask the next question, propose the next experiment, and help shape the direction of the lab as junior leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Graduate school is fundamentally about becoming a scientist. We do not expect you to arrive with all the answers \u2014 we expect you to be motivated to find them. We will work with you to identify a meaningful gap in the field, develop the technical and conceptual skills to address it, and see a rigorous project through to publication. Ask questions constantly. Learn from everyone around you. This is a time to develop multiple categories of skillsets, spanning technical hands on skills, analysis, deeper understanding of the field, writing, graphic design, presentation, and public speaking skills.
