He is now an Associate Professor in the Cardiovascular Research Institute and the Departments of Medicine (Cardiology) and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The McAlpine laboratory investigates exposomic influences on inflammation in cardiovascular and neurological disease, with a particular focus on how the brain senses and regulates peripheral and central inflammation — and how lifestyle behaviors, including sleep and exercise, shape these processes. He then worked for two years as a postbaccalaureate research fellow at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH where he studied prion proteins and molecular chaperones. Now, as a medical student, his research interests lie at the intersection of different organ systems. He is particularly interested in how sleep modulates hematopoietic stem cell differentiation and how this impacts the subsequent development of atherosclerosis.

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,2_3″ admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://labs.icahn.mssm.edu/mcalpinelab2/wp-content/uploads/sites/617/2025/11/Screenshot-2025-11-18-at-1.57.42-PM-1024×992.png” title_text=”Screenshot 2025-11-18 at 1.57.42 PM” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_blurb _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#FFFFFF” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Lena Gaebel, MSc

Research Associate

lena.gaebel@mssm.edu

Lena has particular interest in immune cell crosstalk in the context of neurodegeneration.
