Aum Patel

MD–PhD Student: 2021–2024

Aum is an MD-PhD student who joined the lab in 2021 and studied viral pathogenesis and tissue injury. He is particularly interested in immune-mediated disease mechanisms.

Publications:

Kevin W. Hoffman

M.D./Ph.D. Student: 2014–2018

Kevin explored chemokine signaling and cytokine profiles in viral infections with a focus on Zika and West Nile virus. He made important contributions to our understanding of sex-specific immune responses and viral pathogenesis.

Josh A. Acklin

PhD Candidate: 2017–2022

Josh received a Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Rochester in 2017. He joined the PhD Program in 2017, and advanced to candidacy in early 2019. He has since worked on a variety of projects centering around the concept of host driven inflammation as a driver of pathology, in the context of viral infections. Josh’s work involves the generation of novel human tissue systems to study viral infections, and he has worked on a wide range of pathogens, including Zika, HPIV3, Measles, Mumps and SARS-COV-2. Outside of the lab, Josh is a major advocate for science in the NYC community, co-owning March for Science NYC and serving as one of its two Directors of Programming. He also enjoys spending his free time with his new kitten, Bowie, exploring the Hudson River Valley for hiking trails, and scoping out the best ramen joints in town.

Marisa Goff

PhD Student: 2018–2021

Marisa obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2018. Marisa is now studying host genetic factors that affect susceptibility to antibody-dependent enhancement of flavivirus infection. Outside of lab, she enjoys volunteering with cats at an animal shelter downtown, singing with the ISMMS student choir, hiking outside the city, and knitting more than most grandmothers.

Publications:

Trinisia Fortune

Master’s Student: 2019–2021

Trinisia obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the City College of New York in 2016. In the lab, she developed new tissue-based models for the study of mumps virus infection in humans. Outside of lab, she enjoys running marathons, traveling, cooking, spending time outdoors, and is a huge foodie.

Ante Peros

Master’s Student: 2019–2021

Ante obtained his bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from Hunter College in 2017. Ante is currently studying the enhancement of Zika virus pathogenesis in neonates through dengue-specific maternal antibodies. Outside of lab, Ante enjoys traveling and photography.

Javier Cattle

MPH Student: 2019–2021

Javier received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Biological Sciences from Columbia University and is currently an MPH student studying infectious disease epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. In the lab, he studies host genetic factors implicated in symptom development and disease progression of Zika virus infection as well as enhancement of Zika virus pathogenesis in neonates through dengue-specific maternal antibodies. Outside of the lab, Javier enjoys the outdoors, traveling, getting lost exploring the city, and all things houseplants.

Jakleen Lee

Master’s Student: 2018–2019

Jakleen studied cytokine responses to West Nile virus in human populations. Her work focused on identifying sex-specific differences in immune response and disease severity. Outside the lab, she enjoys cooking, reading, and traveling.
