{"id":136,"date":"2019-12-12T18:17:46","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T18:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/labs.icahn.mssm.edu\/kovaciclab\/?page_id=136"},"modified":"2019-12-12T22:37:26","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T22:37:26","slug":"awards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/labs.icahn.mssm.edu\/kovaciclab\/awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2019 Fibromuscular Dysplasia Society of America: Founders Award:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0award acknowledges Dr. Kovacic&#8217;s outstanding achievements in promoting research and awareness of Fibromuscular Dysplasia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018 Dean&#8217;s Healthcare System Team Science Award:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>the 2018 Team Science Award focused on Team Science in Rare Diseases, an area where Sinai has been and continues to be distinguished.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kovacic and his team were given this prestigious award for their presentation titled &#8220;Defining the cause of Fibromuscular Dysplasia \u2013 The DEFINE-FMD Study.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a poorly understood disease that predominately affects women and may result in serious consequences including stroke and myocardial infarction. Although first reported in 1938, there are limited treatments available and little is known about its cause. To address the lack of understanding, in 2013 we assembled a multi-disciplinary team and initiated the DEFINE-FMD study \u2013 a large, functional \u2018omics study of the genetic and molecular basis of FMD. Our close-knit and collaborative team approach has already shed light on the pathology of FMD, allowing us to identify several disease-causal candidates and to begin to develop a blood-based test for this disease.<\/p>\n<p>Their team included: Jason Kovacic, MD, PhD, Jeffrey W.
