Amy Kontorovich, MD, PhD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Kontorovich is an Associate Professor of Medicine in Cardiology and Director of The Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
Dr. Kontorovich is a physician-scientist whose clinical practice is focused on the diagnosis and management of individuals with hereditary cardiovascular disorders and whose research focuses on identifying novel genetic factors underlying cardiovascular diseases, including myocarditis, cardiomyopathies, and aortopathies as well as studying the natural history, penetrance, and prevalence of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR).
Dr. Kontorovich received a Bachelors of Science and Engineering in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an MD/PhD from Stony Brook University. She completed residency and cardiology fellowship training at Mount Sinai before joining the faculty. Dr. Kontorovich’s research has been supported by grants from National Institutes of Health as well as foundations and industry partners. Regarded as an expert in hereditary cardiovascular disease, Dr. Kontorovich has served as an invited speaker and panelist on the topics of genetics and genomics in cardiovascular disease at numerous regional, national and international meetings.

Research Fellow/Clinical Research Coordinator

Simon Ng, MS
Research Associate

Alex Bashore, PhD
Senior Scientist

Deepa Sarkar
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Deepa is working as a Postdoctoral Fellow, with a research focus on developing machine learning techniques to establish connections between genetic variations, molecular function, and disease using patient datasets. Her objective is to uncover valuable patterns within patients’ medical records and formulate effective strategies for improved, cost-effective, and high-quality patient care. Before joining the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Deepa earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan.

Abena Gyasi
Clinical Research Coordinator

James Johnson
Internal Medicine Resident
James is a PGY-3 Internal Medicine Resident at the Mount Sinai Hospital currently on an NIH NHLBI R38 research grant year in the Kontorovich Lab. He is currently working on a clinical study looking at the impact of autonomic rehabilitation therapy in the hereditary amyloidosis population to address their dysautonomia symptoms, like orthostatic hypotension. He is also writing a review of manifestations of dysautonomia in cardiovascular conditions as well as a review of hypertension management in the hypermobility spectrum disorders. James went to medical school at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, worked as an Intramural Research Training Award recipient conducting translational research at the NIH Clinical Center in the Cypess lab, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Duke University.

Amit Weigman
Master’s Student, Data Science and AI
Amit’s research centers on the application of advanced machine learning techniques to cardiovascular medicine, particularly for the early identification of cardiac amyloidosis and other rare cardiac diseases. He holds an undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences and has previously conducted research in genetic cardiology and cardiac surgery, building a foundation that bridges clinical understanding with computational approaches. Before joining the Kontorovich Lab, Amit worked on AI-driven projects across multiple fields, bringing both technical expertise and a strong medical background to his work. His goal is to bridge computational modeling and medical practice to translate machine learning insights into actionable tools for clinicians.

Isabella Mirro
Medical Student
Isabella is a second year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai working on projects investigating genetics predispositions to peripartum cardiomyopathy and hypermobility spectrum disorders

Izzy Kornblau
Genetic Counselor
Isabelle (Izzy) Kornblau is a board-certified genetic counselor specializing in cardiovascular genetics at the Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Her clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and management of heritable cardiac and vascular disorders, including cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, and aortopathies.
Izzy’s research focuses on the genetic and vascular mechanisms that contribute to aortic and connective tissue disease, including Marfan syndrome, Loeys–Dietz syndrome, and the Ehlers–Danlos syndromes (EDS). She is also involved in the ACT-Early Trial, which aims to improve early detection and intervention for hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv), and in studies examining aortic stiffness, neurological complications, and genotype-phenotype correlations in CTDs. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she is now pursuing a PhD in Clinical Research on the clinical trials track.
