George Morales received his B.S. from Stony Brook University, and with his interest in cancer research and aspirations in helping in graft versus host disease (GVHD) he joined the Ferrara lab at Mount Sinai in 2016. Currently working as laboratory manager he is responsible for overseeing everyday lab operations, ensuring quality standards are met, and supporting clinical and basic mouse research in aGVHD.<\/h6>\n

Mariano Prado Acosta received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires before doing a research fellowship at TiHo University in Hannover, Germany. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow with MAGIC, focusing on mouse organoids in the basic side of the lab.<\/h6>\n

Alberto Utrero-Rico studied health biology\u2019s degree and master\u2019s degree in Immunology research in Madrid, Spain. He studied minority populations of immune system as biomarkers of rejection after kidney transplantation during his PhD. In 2023, he joined Dr. Ferrara’s team as a postdoctoral fellow to study the immune system during bone marrow transplantation and graft versus host disease.<\/h6>\n

Rachel Young is the MAGIC Clinical Trial Manager, starting by working on Bone Marrow Transplant trials in 2007 with Drs. Levine and Ferrara at the University of Michigan, and continued on at the start of MAGIC, with its inception in 2012.\u00a0 As the project has grown, so has her role within MAGIC, including creating and expanding the MAGIC Data Coordinating Center team, adding more sites to the core study, the Natural History Study, and opening therapeutic clinical trials \u2013 collaborating with pharmaceutical companies along the way.\u00a0 She is excited to see what the future brings for this project team and for BMT patients!<\/h6>\n

Yu Akahoshi is a transplant physician in Japan with expertise in retrospective analysis, currently serving as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Overseas Research Fellow. Nikolaos Spyrou is a physician and postdoctoral fellow in MAGIC with a master’s degree in Bioinformatics. In MAGIC, he has been exploring prognostic modeling to develop tools for the prediction of future long-term patient outcomes using present clinical and biomarker information. He will soon begin his internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai to learn how to integrate patient care and research.<\/h6>\n

Sergio Dellepiane completed his PhD and clinical Nephrology training in Torino University in Italy and moved to the United States in 2016. In 2018 he joined Dr. Ferrara’s basic science team where he explored the activation of the complement leptin pathway in GVHD. He now works in Genentech as medical director in the Pharma Late Stage Innovation team.<\/h6>\n

Jay completed medical school and earned his medical degree from Grant Medical College in Mumbai, India, in 2015. He then joined Ferrara lab in 2016 as a clinical research coordinator\/clinical postdoc and contributed to several research projects including a study of over 1600 patients to determine patients that are at an increased risk of relapse. In 2018, Jay moved to SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, to complete residency training in Pediatrics and in 2021 became a fellow in Pediatric Hematology\/Oncology at Texas Children\u2019s Hospital\/Baylor College of Medicine.<\/h6>\n

Stelios Kasikis earned his MD from the University of Patras School of Health Sciences in Greece. As part of the MAGIC data coordinating center, Stelios conducted translational research, involving data review, clinical trial design and analysis. He was involved in several clinical trials that utilize a validated algorithm for risk stratifying patients and identifying optimal treatment. His primary research focuses on pediatric patients with steroid-refractory GVHD, exploring the use of a validated algorithm to guide clinical decisions regarding treatment intensification in this high-risk population. Currently, Stelios is in the final year of his residency training in Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and has plans to pursue fellowship training in hematology\/oncology. In his leisure time, he enjoys sports, long-distance running, reading, traveling, and jazz.<\/h6>\n

Steven Kowalyk obtained his BS in Biology from Manhattan College, where his undergraduate research project in microbiology and public health led him to want to pursue translational research. Steven joined the Ferrara lab in 2017, and as a Senior Associate Researcher, oversaw the GVHD biomarker testing, specifically for the ongoing low risk GVHD pediatric trial and the high risk GVHD clinical trial. After his departure, he intends to keep utilizing his skills in the research domain.<\/h6>\n

Rahnuma Beheshti completed her BS in Biology from St. John\u2019s University in May 2021. With an interest in cancer and immunology she joined Dr. Ferrara\u2019s lab at Mount Sinai as an Associate Researcher. While with the lab, she tested for biomarker concentrations significant to graft-vs-host-disease using patient serum in MAGIC clinical trials.<\/p>\n

Hrishi Srinagesh completed his MD\/MSCR in the Ferrara Lab at Mount Sinai in 2020. His thesis validated serial measurement of MAGIC biomarkers to monitor response to acute GVHD treatment and was published in Blood Advances. Hrishi is completing his internal medicine residency and hematology fellowship at Stanford University with the goal of pursuing a career in bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy.<\/p>\n

Alexandra Capellini studied Public Health at Johns Hopkins University before enrolling at Mount Sinai to pursue an MD and Master of Science in Clinical Research through the selective Patient Oriented Research Training and Leadership (PORTAL) program. She joined the Ferrara lab for a research year following her third year of medical school. During her research year, Alexandra contributed to the analyses of a phase II clinical trial investigating itacitinib as a novel monotherapy for treating low-risk acute GVHD. Alexandra was responsible for creating a control group to generate comparative analyses of efficacy and toxicities among itacitinib vs steroid-treated patients with low-risk acute GVHD. She is proud of the team\u2019s work leading to the publication of results in Blood. Alexandra is starting her Medicine-Pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan. She hopes to pursue a medical and clinical research career in pediatric\/young adult oncology.<\/p>\n

Kaitlyn London is a graduate of the highly selective joint MD and Masters of Science in Clinical Research Patient Oriented Research Training and Leadership (PORTAL) program at Mount Sinai. She joined the Ferrara Lab during her first year of medical school as a Tisch Cancer Institute Inaugural Medical Student Research Fellow and completed her Masters thesis at the Ferrara Lab as an American Society of Hematology Physician Scientist Award recipient analyzing a phase II study of Natalizumab plus standard corticosteroid treatment for high-risk acute GVHD. She is now a Pediatrics Resident at New York Presbyterian \u2013 Weill Cornell and aims to dedicate her career to pediatric hematology-oncology research.<\/h6>\n

Akasha Vega is originally from Orlando, Florida, and received a B.S. in Biology from Duke University in 2021. Following undergrad, she became a Clinical Research Coordinator for the MAGIC team. After two years with the team, she will be matriculating into medical school during the fall of 2023.<\/h6>\n

Stephanie Gergoudis received her medical degree from Mount Sinai in 2021. During her research year she analyzed and published the results of the first clinical the primary trial to use MAGIC biomarkers as eligibility criteria in Blood Advances.<\/em> \u00a0She is currently a resident at Weill-Cornell. Upon finishing her medical residency, she will be joining the Memorial Sloan Kettering community as a chief resident for a year. She is excited to continue her work in oncology and plans to pursue a career in hematology-oncology.<\/p>\n

After receiving\u00a0his B.A. in Biology at the Macaulay\u00a0Honors College\u00a0at Hunter College, Mina joined the Icahn School of Medicine in class of 2019 to pursue his M.D. In order to further his research interests in the fields of oncology and immunology he joined the Ferrara lab in his 1st year of medical\u00a0school. This research endeavor\u00a0culminated in the pursuit\u00a0of a scholarly year sponsored by the\u00a0Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. His project focused on utilizing disease risk and GVHD biomarkers in order to stratify\u00a0patients for risk of relapse and nonrelapse\u00a0mortality following HCT. His translational work in the Ferrara lab contributed significantly to Mina’s choice to pursue a career as a dermatologist.<\/p>\n
