He was born in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain). He obtained his medical degree from Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona and completed residency training in Pathology (with a special focus in Hematopathology) at the Hospital del Mar\/IMAS, under the supervision of Prof. Sergi Serrano-Figueras. He obtained his PhD from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, studying the regulation of the <em>Snail<\/em> transcription factor during cancer invasion and metastasis with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imim.cat\/programesrecerca\/cancer\/ubcm.html\">Antonio Garcia de Herreros<\/a> at the Institut Hospital del Mar d\u2019Investigacions M\u00e8diques (IMIM). Then he joined the laboratory of <a href=\"http:\/\/icg.cpmc.columbia.edu\/research-faculty\/Riccardo-Dalla-Favera-lab\">Riccardo Dalla-Favera<\/a> at Columbia University as a postdoctoral fellow. There he studied and dissected the role of the proto-oncogene c-MYC during normal B cell responses and B cell lymphomagenesis. He described a novel role for MYC in the control of DNA replication and identified MYC as a central element in germinal center B cell responses, findings that have important conceptual implications for our understanding of the role of this proto-oncogene in B cell lymphomas. Recently, he also described a role for FOXO1 in establishing architectural and functional polarity in germinal centers.
