Drs. Uraina Clark & Yasmin Hurd are organizing an upcoming panel discussion, “Strategizing for Research Success & Equity,” a conversation to follow up on the publication, Addressing racism and disparities in the biomedical sciences, by Drs. Clark & Hurd, with speakers: Stephanie Tankou, MD, PhD; Kirk Campbell, MD; Yasmin Hurd, PhD; and Uraina Clark, PhD, to be held on Feb 9, 2023 via Zoom. The discussion will consider strategies for crafting a successful research career as well as enhancing equity within this space. Audience participation is welcomed during this interactive Q&A session. Students and trainees of all levels are encouraged to join. The panel discussion is hosted by Mount Sinai’s Students for Equal Opportunity in Medicine (SEOM) and Students for Equal Opportunity in Science (SEOS).

Dr. Clark recently received an R01 award from the NIAAA. With this award Dr. Clark’s team will conduct a new study to examine whether exposure to different types of stress leads to changes in behaviors linked to alcohol use.

Dr. Clark recently received a pilot award from Mount Sinai’s Friedman Brain Institute. With this award Dr. Clark’s team will conduct a new study to examine whether and how exposure to different types of stress may be related to cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Commentary in Nature Human Behaviour

Dr. Clark coauthored a commentary with Dr. Yasmin Hurd published in Nature Human Behaviour, entitled “Addressing racism and disparities in the biomedical sciences.” In their piece, Drs. Clark & Hurd call for proactive antiracism approaches to eliminate barriers impacting people of color, promote health equity, and achieve a more effective biomedical community.

Upcoming Seminar – Diversity in Neuroscience Series

Dr. Clark will present a talk, entitled “Social Discrimination and its Associations with Brain Function,” on September 18 at Mount Sinai. The talk will include recent findings from our laboratory published in Biological Psychiatry:CNNI. This seminar is part of The Friedman Brain Institute’s “Diversity in Neuroscience” series and is co-sponsored by Mount Sinai’s Women in Science and Medicine. We hope to see you there!

Dr. Uraina Clark Receives “Rising Star” Award

Dr. Clark has been recognized as a Rising Star and has received an invitation to attend the National Institute on Aging/American Geriatrics Society‘s Bench-to-Bedside Conference in Bethesda, MD. The conference is part of a series of prestigious scientific conferences on emerging issues in geriatrics. At the conference, Dr. Clark will present her recent research findings on the neural correlates of memory impairments in adults.

Presentation at the 46th Annual Society for Neuroscience Meeting

Dr. Keenan Walker presented his recent research findings at the annual Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego, California. Dr. Walker’s talk was entitled, “Examining the effect of HIV on measures of medial prefrontal cortex functioning.” Keenan conducted this research in our laboratory as a predoctoral Mount Sinai Institute for NeuroAIDS Disparities (MSINAD) Scholar; he is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

Our Research Receives a Blue Ribbon Award
August 2016
Our recent submission to the 124th American Psychological Association (APA) Annual Convention was ranked among the best papers received by APA Division 40, and has been chosen to receive a Blue Ribbon Award. This award is distributed by the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (Division 40), the largest division of the APA. Only 3 papers were selected to receive this award from over 60 entries. Dr. Clark presented our award winning paper, entitled “Reaction Time Variability is Sensitive to High Early-Life Stress in HIV+ Adults,” at the APA convention on August 4, 2016.

Dr. Uraina Clark Recognized by the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre in London
March 2016
Dr. Clark was one of 11 women honored with a Suffrage Science award from the Clinical Sciences Centre, a premier research institute of the Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom. Suffrage Science awards are given to leading researchers in the life sciences in recognition of their scientific achievements and ability to inspire others. The award ceremony was held at the Royal Society in London on March 8, 2016. Additional information is available here and here.

Ms. Laurie Baker (2014 MSINAD Scholar) presented her recent research findings in a poster entitled, “Cognitive predictors of the Medication Management Task-Revised in an HIV+ racial/ethnic minority cohort” in Denver, Colorado. Ms. Baker’s research is a collaborative effort with Dr. Clark and the Mount Sinai MHBB research team.

New Grant Awarded to Keenan Walker, MA

Mr. Keenan Walker, MA, a graduate student in clinical psychology at St. John’s University, was recently awarded a Mount Sinai Institute for NeuroAIDS Disparities (MSINAD) scholar grant to conduct his research study entitled, “An Examination of Executive Dysfunction Associated with Frontostriatal Circuitry in a Diverse HIV+ Sample,” at Mount Sinai under the mentorship of Dr. Clark. Presentation at the 2014 Cognitive Aging Conference

Ms. Hannah Riskin-Jones, BA, will be presenting her research findings at the 2014 Cognitive Aging Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Riskin-Jones’s poster is entitled, “New tool for quantification of white matter hyperintensities.” This research project was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Clark and colleagues at Brown University.

Dr. Uraina Clark Wins Consortium in Brain Research Award
February 2014
Dr. Clark recently received a joint award from Mount Sinai’s Friedman Brain Institute and UCLA’s Brain Research Institute to conduct a collaborative research project with Drs. Edythe London and Keith Heinzerling at UCLA. The group plans to examine the effects of early-life stress and HIV on neuroinflammation in the context of methamphetamine use disorder.
