Dr. Goutam Chakraborty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology and the Department of Oncological Sciences, member of the Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His expertise lies in cancer cell biology, with a particular focus on the functional genomics of oncogenic drivers that contribute to cancer progression and metastasis. During his graduate studies under the mentorship of Dr. Gopal Kundu at the National Centre for Cell Science in India, Dr. Chakraborty’s research focused on tumor angiogenesis. He later joined the Department of Cell Biology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York as a postdoctoral researcher, working with Dr. Filippo Giancotti’s group to investigate cellular plasticity, dormancy, and cancer metastasis. Subsequently, he joined Dr. Philip W. Kantoff’s team in the Department of Medicine at MSKCC, where he was promoted to faculty (Assistant Attending). In recognition of his contributions to DNA damage repair and prostate cancer research, Dr. Chakraborty received the Young Investigator Award (Class of 2019) from the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). His research has played a pivotal role in identifying and establishing the functional impact of PIK3R1 mutations and metabolic reprogramming in lethal cancer. Since joining the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, he has continued to advance the understanding of prostate cancer biology and explore innovative treatment strategies for patients. Throughout his career, Dr. Chakraborty has maintained a strong portfolio of federally and foundation-funded research in cancer biology. The success of his interdisciplinary research is evident in his peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as Cell, Cancer Cell, Clinical Cancer Research, PNAS, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Cell Reports, Cancer Research, Oncogene, and others, as well as two patent filings. More recently, his work has focused on translational science, particularly in the identification and preclinical validation of novel targeted therapies, including combination therapies, for therapy-resistant metastatic cancer—addressing a critical need for effective treatments. Beyond research, Dr. Chakraborty has a passion for analog/film photography, traveling, and playing Badminton. He is also an avid Star Wars fan and a die-hard supporter of Mohun Bagan and Arsenal Football Club. Education: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc): Zoology (Hons):University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India. Master of Science. (M.Sc): Zoology: Darjeeling Government College, Darjeeling, India PhD: Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR-India) Fellow, National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, India. Post doctoral Research Fellowship: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC),New York, NY

Shipra Chaudhary, MRes, PhD
Post Doctoral Fellow

Dr. Shipra Chaudhary received her Master of Research (MRes) in Oral Cancer University of Dundee, Scotland, and earned her PhD in medical radiation biology and DNA damage repair (DDR) from University Hospital Essen, Germany. Her research focuses on understanding DNA damage repair mechanisms in prostate cancer cells, specifically how these cells repair DNA breaks when androgen signaling is modulated. She also examines how alterations in the BRCA2 gene, including deletions and mutations, influence androgen signaling—a process critical to the growth of prostate cancer. Currently, Dr. Chaudhary is investigating strategies to enhance the effectiveness of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who harbor mutations in BRCA2 or other DDR genes within their tumors. By combining ADT with agents that target DNA repair pathways, her research aims to identify improved treatment options that can enhance patient outcomes.

Learn more...
Dr. Sarah Ann King is a first-generation biologist who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s DRSB program in the summer of 2023. Her journey in scientific research began at the young age of 14. Over the past 15 years, she has worked in a diverse array of laboratories across the fields of biology and chemistry, yet one aspect has remained constant: her love and passion for science. Currently, Dr. King’s research focuses on understanding how the loss and mutation of key Y chromosome genes contribute to the initiation and progression of male-only and male-predominant urogenital cancers. Additionally, her broader research interests encompass precision medicine, patient-specific disease models, in vitro disease modeling, and organoids.

Dr. Prathiksha Prabhakaraalva, originally from India, has a strong academic background in both Microbiology and Molecular Biology. She holds a master’s degree in biomedical science and a Ph.D. in Infectious Diseases from Nitte University, Mangaluru. In addition to her research expertise, she has over two years of experience as an Assistant Professor. Currently, Dr. Prabhakaraalva’s research focuses on investigating the impact of reprogrammed PIK3R1-insulin-glucose metabolism pathways due to PIK3R1 alterations in the progression of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Her work aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and cell signaling pathways that regulate the insulin-PI3K-glycolytic axis in prostate cancer. Outside the lab, she enjoys going for walks and catching up with friends.

Nabila Zaman, MS
Associate Researcher and Lab Manager
nabila.zaman@mountsinai.org
Nabila Zaman earned her master’s degree in bioinformatics from NYU and has beenworking with Dr. Chakraborty since June 2022. Their current research focuses on low–PSA aggressive prostate cancer, with a particular emphasis on investigating prostatecancer in African American men and developing novel therapeutic approaches. Beyond research, Nabila has a passion for calligraphy and enjoys exploring newdestinations through travel.
