She is also the founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yesseniatorresfoundation.com\/\"><strong data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"355\">Yesenia Torres Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, a nonprofit dedicated to social transformation through love, justice, and solidarity. Guided by four core pillars\u2014<strong data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"585\">empowering women, protecting children\u2019s rights, promoting the well-being of the elderly, and defending animals<\/strong>\u2014her organization creates meaningful programs and initiatives that make a tangible difference in the community.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"1187\">Despite living with a disability, Yesenia has carved an inspiring path as a <strong data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"813\">speaker, life coach, and activist<\/strong> for people with disabilities in New York, earning recognition and multiple awards for her work. Her book, <strong data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"945\">Destined to Be Reborn<\/strong>, is part of the <em data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"983\">Against the Horizon<\/em> series and demonstrates that the only true disability is of the mind and spirit. Written with courage and resilience, it illuminates the power of the human spirit to overcome life\u2019s darkest challenges.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1392\">We had the privilege of interviewing Yesenia to hear more about her experiences and insights following her injury, and her story continues to inspire and empower countless individuals in the community.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"758\" data-start=\"277\"><strong data-end=\"300\" data-start=\"277\">Garrison Redd (GR):<\/strong> Can you share the story of your injury and how it changed your life?<br data-end=\"372\" data-start=\"369\" \/><strong data-end=\"396\" data-start=\"372\">Yesenia Torres (YT):<\/strong> Thirty years ago, I was in a car accident that left me with a C4\u20135 incomplete spinal cord injury. Overnight, everything I knew changed. At first, the loss felt overwhelming. But over time, I realized my injury gave me something profound\u2014the chance to rebuild my life with purpose. It became a journey of physical adaptation, spiritual growth, and rediscovery.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1128\" data-start=\"760\"><strong data-end=\"767\" data-start=\"760\">GR:<\/strong> What was the biggest adjustment you had to make after your spinal cord injury?<br data-end=\"849\" data-start=\"846\" \/><strong data-end=\"856\" data-start=\"849\">YT:<\/strong> The hardest adjustment was depending on others for basic needs\u2014washing, dressing, or using the bathroom. For someone who valued independence, that was humbling. With time, I came to see dependence not as weakness, but as a way to build trust, connection, and community.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1555\" data-start=\"1130\"><strong data-end=\"1137\" data-start=\"1130\">GR:<\/strong> How did your mindset shift from the early days after your injury to now?<br data-end=\"1213\" data-start=\"1210\" \/><strong data-end=\"1220\" data-start=\"1213\">YT:<\/strong> In the beginning, I often cried in private, grieving the life I thought I had lost. I felt frustrated and trapped. Today, I see my life differently. This reality opened doors to opportunities I never imagined\u2014to inspire, to serve, and to live with deeper meaning. My injury gave me the gift of purpose and alignment with my mission.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"1881\" data-start=\"1557\"><strong data-end=\"1564\" data-start=\"1557\">GR:<\/strong> Who or what gave you the most strength during your recovery?<br data-end=\"1628\" data-start=\"1625\" \/><strong data-end=\"1635\" data-start=\"1628\">YT:<\/strong> My family and friends gave me the strength to keep going. Their unwavering support carried me through my darkest moments. My spirituality also became vital\u2014it reminded me that faith and hope can carry us further than we ever believed possible.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2221\" data-start=\"1883\"><strong data-end=\"1890\" data-start=\"1883\">GR:<\/strong> What\u2019s your relationship with Mount Sinai?<br data-end=\"1936\" data-start=\"1933\" \/><strong data-end=\"1943\" data-start=\"1936\">YT:<\/strong> Sinai has become like a second home. Through peer mentoring, speaking engagements, and community programs, I\u2019ve stayed deeply connected. Being part of Sinai allows me to give back while also receiving the invaluable gift of connection with others who understand this journey.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2531\" data-start=\"2223\"><strong data-end=\"2230\" data-start=\"2223\">GR:<\/strong> What do you value most about Mount Sinai\u2019s programs?<br data-end=\"2286\" data-start=\"2283\" \/><strong data-end=\"2293\" data-start=\"2286\">YT:<\/strong> Sinai gave me a space to grow into my disability. Through volunteering, mentoring, adaptive sports, and community events, I discovered resilience and possibility. More than that, I found a second family within the disability community.<\/p>\n<hr data-end=\"2536\" data-start=\"2533\" \/>\n<h3 data-end=\"2561\" data-start=\"2538\">Day-to-Day Living<\/h3>\n<p data-end=\"2890\" data-start=\"2563\"><strong data-end=\"2570\" data-start=\"2563\">GR:<\/strong> What\u2019s one daily challenge people might overlook about living with an SCI?<br data-end=\"2648\" data-start=\"2645\" \/><strong data-end=\"2655\" data-start=\"2648\">YT:<\/strong> People don\u2019t see the invisible battles\u2014long nights with spasms, fighting to find a comfortable position, or battling insomnia. If I don\u2019t rest well, my entire day is harder. Still, I choose gratitude and determination every morning.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"3225\" data-start=\"2892\"><strong data-end=\"2899\" data-start=\"2892\">GR:<\/strong> How have you adapted your home environment to make life easier?<br data-end=\"2966\" data-start=\"2963\" \/><strong data-end=\"2973\" data-start=\"2966\">YT:<\/strong> My home is equipped with tools that give me independence: an electric bed for transfers, a Hoyer lift for safety, a tub bench for bathing, and Alexa to control lights, music, and calls. These adaptations give me freedom in the ways that matter most.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"3452\" data-start=\"3227\"><strong data-end=\"3234\" data-start=\"3227\">GR:<\/strong> What piece of adaptive equipment can\u2019t you live without?<br data-end=\"3294\" data-start=\"3291\" \/><strong data-end=\"3301\" data-start=\"3294\">YT:<\/strong> My hand brace and L-shaped cuff. With them, I can eat, write, brush my teeth, scratch an itch, and use my computer. They give me daily independence.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"3793\" data-start=\"3454\"><strong data-end=\"3461\" data-start=\"3454\">GR:<\/strong> How do you care for your physical and mental health each day?<br data-end=\"3526\" data-start=\"3523\" \/><strong data-end=\"3533\" data-start=\"3526\">YT:<\/strong> I practice meditation, gratitude, and breathing exercises. I nourish my mind with empowering books and spiritual education, and I keep my body moving through stretching and exercise. Rest is equally important\u2014I honor my body by giving it the sleep it needs.<\/p>\n<hr data-end=\"3798\" data-start=\"3795\" \/>\n<h3 data-end=\"3826\" data-start=\"3800\">Community &amp; Advocacy<\/h3>\n<p data-end=\"4050\" data-start=\"3828\"><strong data-end=\"3835\" data-start=\"3828\">GR:<\/strong> How important has community support been in your journey?<br data-end=\"3896\" data-start=\"3893\" \/><strong data-end=\"3903\" data-start=\"3896\">YT:<\/strong> Invaluable. It encouraged me to try new things, discover resources, and build a purposeful life. Knowing I\u2019m not alone makes all the difference.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"4286\" data-start=\"4052\"><strong data-end=\"4059\" data-start=\"4052\">GR:<\/strong> What advice would you give to someone newly injured?<br data-end=\"4115\" data-start=\"4112\" \/><strong data-end=\"4122\" data-start=\"4115\">YT:<\/strong> Take it one day at a time. It will be hard, but this isn\u2019t the end\u2014it\u2019s the beginning of a new chapter. You have the power to shape it into something meaningful.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"4590\" data-start=\"4288\"><strong data-end=\"4295\" data-start=\"4288\">GR:<\/strong> Do you think society is becoming more inclusive for people with SCI?<br data-end=\"4367\" data-start=\"4364\" \/><strong data-end=\"4374\" data-start=\"4367\">YT:<\/strong> Inclusion is improving. Representation is growing in media, education, and workplaces. But inclusion requires more than visibility\u2014it requires action. We need to ensure change is lived reality, not just symbolism.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"4857\" data-start=\"4592\"><strong data-end=\"4599\" data-start=\"4592\">GR:<\/strong> What role does advocacy play in improving accessibility?<br data-end=\"4659\" data-start=\"4656\" \/><strong data-end=\"4666\" data-start=\"4659\">YT:<\/strong> Advocacy is essential. It\u2019s the voice demanding progress, accessibility, and equality. When we unite as a community, we can influence policy, protect rights, and open doors for the future.<\/p>\n<hr data-end=\"4862\" data-start=\"4859\" \/>\n<h3 data-end=\"4900\" data-start=\"4864\">Sports, Fitness &amp; Independence<\/h3>\n<p data-end=\"5141\" data-start=\"4902\"><strong data-end=\"4909\" data-start=\"4902\">GR:<\/strong> Have adaptive sports or fitness played a role in your life?<br data-end=\"4972\" data-start=\"4969\" \/><strong data-end=\"4979\" data-start=\"4972\">YT:<\/strong> Absolutely. They keep my body strong, prevent deterioration, and bring joy. They also provide connection and remind me that movement\u2014in any form\u2014is empowering.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"5458\" data-start=\"5143\"><strong data-end=\"5150\" data-start=\"5143\">GR:<\/strong> What does independence mean to you now compared to before?<br data-end=\"5212\" data-start=\"5209\" \/><strong data-end=\"5219\" data-start=\"5212\">YT:<\/strong> Before, independence meant doing everything alone. Today, it means having the ability to adapt and live on my own terms. Independence is about being self-sufficient where possible, and interdependent where necessary. Both are strengths.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"5706\" data-start=\"5460\"><strong data-end=\"5467\" data-start=\"5460\">GR:<\/strong> How do you stay motivated to overcome obstacles?<br data-end=\"5519\" data-start=\"5516\" \/><strong data-end=\"5526\" data-start=\"5519\">YT:<\/strong> I remind myself that everything happens for a reason. My accident gave me a second chance. My answer to that gift is to live with purpose, inspire others, and grow continuously.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"5983\" data-start=\"5708\"><strong data-end=\"5715\" data-start=\"5708\">GR:<\/strong> What goals are you working toward right now?<br data-end=\"5763\" data-start=\"5760\" \/><strong data-end=\"5770\" data-start=\"5763\">YT:<\/strong> Personally, I\u2019m nurturing my spirituality and strengthening body and mind. Professionally, I\u2019m expanding my role as a mentor and advocate\u2014helping newly injured individuals see possibility instead of limitation.<\/p>\n<hr data-end=\"5988\" data-start=\"5985\" \/>\n<h3 data-end=\"6009\" data-start=\"5990\">Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p data-end=\"6322\" data-start=\"6011\"><strong data-end=\"6018\" data-start=\"6011\">GR:<\/strong> What changes would you like to see in healthcare for the SCI community?<br data-end=\"6093\" data-start=\"6090\" \/><strong data-end=\"6100\" data-start=\"6093\">YT:<\/strong> I\u2019d like healthcare that treats the whole person\u2014not just the injury. That means long-term rehab, personalized care, and equal attention to mental and emotional health. Support shouldn\u2019t end when you leave the hospital.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"6626\" data-start=\"6324\"><strong data-end=\"6331\" data-start=\"6324\">GR:<\/strong> How do you envision the future for people living with SCI?<br data-end=\"6393\" data-start=\"6390\" \/><strong data-end=\"6400\" data-start=\"6393\">YT:<\/strong> A future where accessibility is universal, adaptive technologies are affordable, and people with SCI are fully integrated into every aspect of society. Where we\u2019re valued for what we contribute, not defined by what we lack.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"6856\" data-start=\"6628\"><strong data-end=\"6635\" data-start=\"6628\">GR:<\/strong> What message would you share with able-bodied people about SCI?<br data-end=\"6702\" data-start=\"6699\" \/><strong data-end=\"6709\" data-start=\"6702\">YT:<\/strong> Limitations don\u2019t define our lives. We have the same dreams, ambitions, and joys as anyone else. Approach us with respect and openness\u2014not pity.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"7164\" data-start=\"6858\"><strong data-end=\"6865\" data-start=\"6858\">GR:<\/strong> What\u2019s one lesson your injury taught you that you wouldn\u2019t trade?<br data-end=\"6934\" data-start=\"6931\" \/><strong data-end=\"6941\" data-start=\"6934\">YT:<\/strong> Resilience, gratitude, and living with intention. I\u2019ve learned that life isn\u2019t about perfection or control\u2014it\u2019s about adaptation, growth, and love.
