Center for Scientific Diversity at ISMMS Mission Statement
Increasing both the diversity of the clinical investigator workforce and the research success of URM investigators is a national priority and of utmost importance to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). Thus, we have established the Center for Scientific Diversity (CSD) to foster, develop, and assess empirically-supported practices that promote and enhance scientific innovation, diversity and equitable advancement within the biomedical investigator workforce. CSD is made up of a multidisciplinary team of scientific investigators and innovators committed to diversity and inclusion from various departments across ISMMS with expertise in biostatistics, behavioral psychology, neuropsychology, basic science, medicine, neuroscience, and health disparities research.
Our comprehensive, synergistic mission is four-fold. First, we aim to investigate, foster, and develop best practices for increasing: 1) research success and advancement of underrepresented faculty in academic medicine, and 2) research engagement of underrepresented students in the biomedical workforce. Second, we aim to explore best practices for sustaining resilience among underrepresented faculty and students in academic medicine. Third, we aim to leverage prior successes to establish effective programs to build biomedical research capacity for underrepresented students, postdocs, and faculty. Lastly, we aim to disseminate successful initiatives developed in the Center for Scientific Diversity (CSD) for implementation nationwide.
