Center for Scientific Diversity at ISMMS Mission Statement

Increasing both the diversity of the clinical investigator workforce and the research success of URM investigators is a national priority and of utmost importance to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). Thus, we have established the Center for Scientific Diversity (CSD) to foster, develop, and assess empirically-supported practices that promote and enhance scientific innovation, diversity and equitable advancement within the biomedical investigator workforce. CSD is made up of a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team of scientific investigators, thought leaders, and innovators committed to diversity and inclusion from various departments across ISMMS with expertise in biostatistics, basic science, behavioral psychology, community psychology, epidemiology, medicine, neuropsychology, neuroscience, and health disparities research. Our work in the CSD is informed by rigorous scientific inquiry that promotes scholarly discourse that deliberately and strategically aims to dismantle racism and other systemic barriers that impede (1) the engagement of underrepresented trainees in STEM research, and (2) the research success and professional advancement of diverse faculty.

The mission of the CSD is to foster an academic culture of inclusive excellence in which diverse members of the research workforce, inclusive of faculty and trainees, can thrive. As such, we aim to develop best practices that promote and sustain this culture at the institutional and national levels. We will accomplish this mission through synergistic, collaborative activities as governed by three foundational pillars: (1) research, (2) advocacy, and (3) training and enrichment.
