Clinical Research Unit Announces New Location and Phlebotomy Services

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU)  is the hub for conducting clinical and translational research at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). With its new facility and recent launch of unscheduled walk-in phlebotomy services, the CRU can support even more ISMMS research endeavors.  All funded ISSMS faculty are eligible to use its facilities, nursing support, specimen processing, and other resources.  The CRU currently supports 90 protocols involving a wide variety of specialties and subspecialties, with research participants of all ages.

The recently relocated facility on the ground floor of the Annenberg Building (across from the mid-rise elevator bank) includes a reception area and exam rooms for brief visits and minor procedures.  In the nearby courtyard, rooms are available for day-long procedures and interventions requiring infusions and monitoring.  There is also a laboratory for specimen processing.

The CRU is staffed by nurse practitioners who can perform physical examinations, monitor participants, and perform infusions, and medical assistants who perform phlebotomy, electrocardiograms, and process samples.

To add to their already comprehensive offering, they now provide a new convenience for their users:  WALK-IN PHLEBOTOMY SERVICES.  Walk-in (no scheduling needed) phlebotomy is available for blood sampling, where: 1) the study team is taking the sample to their lab for processing, and/or 2) samples are going to hospital labs and the participant’s demographics are already available for registration in Epic.  The service is available 9AM to 4:30 PM Monday-Friday (except hospital holidays). The CRU is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM.

For more information, check out their brochure.

If you have not used the services before and would like to meet the staff and tour the facilities, or if you have any questions, please e-mail Joanne Zephir at joanne.zephir@mssm.edu.  Additional information and the application for using the CRU, including the walk-in phlebotomy service, are available at http://icahn.mssm.edu/research/portal/resources/clinical-research.
