Welcome to the Clinical and Translational Research Unit ( CTRU )

Drs. Steven Coca, DO, MS and Girish Nadkarni, MD, MPH, CPH Co-Directors of the Clinical and Translational Research Unit

The Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU) is a unique, translational and multidisciplinary research program that is devoted to conducting cutting-edge research in nephrology as well as fostering the development of young investigators and trainees in clinical research.

Despite significant advances, kidney disease is still a major public health problem. Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of laboratory scientists, clinical investigators, quality improvement experts and statisticians who are committed to conducting patient-centered research and applying preclinical science to clinical decision making and patient care. We aim to leverage the considerable expertise of this talented group of investigators as well as the unique environment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to improve health and outcomes for patients suffering from kidney disease.

We have a state of the art translational biomarker laboratory, which has significant expertise in development and validation of novel biomarkers for kidney and cardiovascular disease. This is complemented by a dedicated bioinformatics and statistical support with expertise in analysis of large datasets. It is our goal to bring these resources to bear to conduct high-efficiency, targeted trials to discover newer therapies for kidney disease and and to advance the paradigms for the clinical care of patients at risk for or with kidney disease by implementing a multi-dimensional state-of-the-art ecosystem in academic medical centers.
