I model colorectal cancer in Drosophila in order to elucidate new therapeutic treatments. Through the completion of my thesis project and graduate coursework I hope to attend medical school in the future.

Personal

I enjoy watching soccer on the weekends and traveling to places that are off the beaten path.

I am a research associate in the lab, looking to develop and identify therapeutic compounds for the RASopathies. By screening for potential drugs with the fruit fly, we are able to visually confirm the action of the most effective compounds, which will lead to further studies in mammalian systems.

Personal

In my free time, I enjoy camping, hiking, going to concerts in NYC, and the great state of New Jersey.

Here in the Cagan Lab, I am a member of the Colorectal Cancer (CRC) team designing patient-specific variants of CRC models in Drosophila. The extensive drug screens that we perform on these models lead us closer to drugs and drug combinations that show various degrees of “rescue” in the cancer phenotypes that we observe in the flies. This project bridges my passion for molecular biological approaches to disease phenotypes and the clinical implications of the tests performed.

Personal

In my free time I play classical piano, learn the acoustic guitar, and play basketball.

My name is Angelique Ruggiero and I am a student in the Masters of Biomedical Sciences program at the Icahn School of Medicine. My research project is focused on tauopathy, a type of Alzheimer’s disease caused by a mutation of tau protein in the human brain. My goal is to use genetic techniques and conduct drug screens in the Drosophila model to distinguish potential therapeutic targets to treat the effects of this mutation.

Personal

I love reading, dancing, nature and coffee!

I help to validate our fly patient models once they arrive at our lab. Once a model is validated I take it through the drug screening process. When a drug hit is identified, it is tested in combination to find a unique drug cocktail for that patient.

People who get to know me soon learn that I love my dog a ridiculous amount and always have a knitting project in my bag.
